In December the County Board approved the final design and construction plans for the Victory Memorial Drive gateway and monument in north Minneapolis. Victory Memorial Drive honors the 568 Hennepin County residents who perished in World War I. The project includes redesigning monuments and gateways on the parkway, closing eight cross streets, extending green space, and installing new roadway and pathway lighting. These improvements will preserve and enhance the historic landscape character and improve traffic flow and safety for bike and pedestrian use on the parkway.
The County has contributed more than $2 million to the Victory Memorial Drive historic district and the State of Minnesota approved more than $1 million for the project earlier this year. This represents a significant commitment and responsibility by Hennepin County to the restoration of a neglected historic monument that recognizes the sacrifices of our residents in the First World War.
